Looking for a holiday home in Cape Cod

My Dad was American so we spent a lot of time in Cape Cod and on Martha's vineyard when I was little. I was too young to remember the specifics of the places we went but I really loved our times there and would like a similar experience for my children.

Can anyone suggest a good place to buy a holiday home in these areas? Is it still a safe and welcoming place for young families or has it changed? Is it better to buy something in Cape Cod and travel over over Martha's Vineyard or should I buy on the vineyard? Is there anyone else with a property or some experience in these places that could offer some advice?
